A Few Highlights Of 2021
We’re almost closing in 2021. It was still a very challenging year for all of us. The second-year that we had to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. Another year that kept us mostly at home instead of seeing everyone live on trade shows or other denim events. Luckily we had contact with Zoom or Skype or whatever, and via social media of course. Hopefully, we can meet each other again in 2022 somewhere around the globe and talk about our denim passion!
Fortunately, there are also beautiful things to look back on this year. There’re too many highlights to cover in a recap from 2021, but to close the year, I would like to share some of my highlights of a very vibrating year.
10-Years Of Long John
This year I reached the 10-years milestone with Long John as I’m running this online denim magazine, and working as a freelance denim specialist for brands, retail, mills, and events since 2011. During the years I created around 4,000 articles on Long John, met so many passionate people, traveled around the world to meet and greet like-minded denim people. I have also worked with the best denim companies around and worked on so many outstanding projects. I’m ready for the next 10-years of Long John!
Freelance (Denim) Projects
Next to running this online Long John denim magazine, I’m also working as a freelance denim specialist for brands, retail, mills, and events. I worked this year on many projects, mostly focussed on creating unique content (offline and online), branding projects, developing, connecting, and overall marketing support.
Butts and Shoulders
With the Butts and Shoulders brand, we made some new developments, and we launched a new Chelsea boot style. A classic footwear style, but this time made with natural vegetable-tanned leather. Next to that, we worked on a special, still running, ‘The Magnificent 5’ aging wear contest. With this contest, 5 participants are wearing the new Chelsea boots to see which will turn out the most beautiful over time. This contest runs until the 5th of March, 2022. So, to be continued…
Vans Vault x Nigel Cabourn
This year Vans Vault teamed up with legend Nigel Cabourn for a special limited-edition collection. I was asked to create a unique content story to boost this collaboration between both here on Long John, and my social channels.
I worked also on the launch of the new Silvercreek jeans. This project was focused to introduce the new washings of the earlier White Oak by Cone Denim edition, where I was involved too (more about this here).
The New Denim Days Platform
With the Denim Days team, we worked on the new online Denim Days platform. A place that is an extension of the yearly event, where people can get inspired, informed about denim, but where they also can buy that one-of-a-kind piece of denim or other cool product. The platform will grow more over time, and we’re also planning a new edition of the event in April 2022. Hopefully, we can make it happen (fingers crossed)!
60K Followers On Instagram
Another milestone this year is that I reached 60K followers on Instagram. Instagram is still the strongest social channel today to inspire, connect, and share content. Most of the content is about denim, but also related content that shows the denim lifestyle in general. If you don’t follow me on Instagram yet, check it out here.
New Vintage Treasures
As a denim collector, I’m always on the hunt to expand my private collection. I use these items to create unique content for this online magazine, but I use them also in my denim workshops to inspire staff of retail, brands, and mills. These items are sharing the history of denim, details that can be used as inspiration for new collections, or angles to use for store staff as it’s more important than ever that you know what you’re selling, so you need the (history) story, and sometimes also references and background stories design-wise.
Created Around 300 Articles On Long John
With daily updates, I share the latest news about denim and high-quality made products on my online denim magazine Long John. You can explore the latest (denim) trends, meet (denim) people, find the most outstanding pieces and stores, and see what’s happening in the industry in general.
This year I created around 300 articles on Long John to highlight the coolest brands, retailers, mills, events, and (denim) people.
Joined Several Webinars And Workshops
This year was still all about online workshops, seminars, and events due to the current global situation. Normally I educate and inspire store staff, brands, and so on with my denim workshops, but, this year it still moved to online.
I did many workshops for several clients, and was also part of seminars and panels as the first edition of the ‘Denim Video Awards’ by Tencel, and judged the new edition of the yearly denim fade contest ‘Indigo Invitational’.
Many Interview Publications
I was pleased to be interviewed by so many people this year that highlighted my 10th anniversary with Long John, and sharing my denim story and my thoughts about denim in general. There’re too many to point out, but some of them are Sourcing Journal, The Spin Off, J’N’C Magazine, FashionUnited, Inside Denim, Avant Magazine, Textilia, The Heritage Post, and also Cone Denim did recently a great interview, which you can read here.
What’s Next In 2022?
A fresh year with a lot of new challenges ahead! In the new year, I’m looking forward to keeping ongoing creating unique content for Long John to spread the latest updates within the denim industry. Next to that, I can’t wait to show you the new projects that I’m working on right now as a freelance denim specialist. And, as said earlier, I hope we can finally meet each other live in person again because there’s no online call or meeting which can beat that of course!
