Antonio Di Battista Takes Blue Blanket To Next Level

Antonio di Battista from Italy is a well known and very respected denim designer and collector. Since 9 years he’s also the driving force behind the Blue Blanket brand. The brand is based on mixing elements from the craftsmanship of Italy, Japan and America. This results in unique, timeless and classic styles.

Next year the brand will celebrate their 10 years anniversary so it was time to expand the brand and make next future steps to realize Antonio’s denim goals. Perfect timing to have a chat with him to hear all about these steps and his brand new developed collection. In the interview you can hear all about it and you will also get a sneak peak of what you can expect.

LJ: Where is the inspiration from the new collection coming from?

AdB: As usual all the inspiration comes from the reinterpretation of the iconic masters of jeans. This new collection contains three different concepts. The first one is ‘Contemporary’ where I made a sort of reinterpretations of the classic icons of the rich vintage denim history, but all with a modern approach. This can be seen in the fits, fabrics and details. The second part is inspired to ‘Workwear’ of the fifties and the third, and last part, is inspired to the legendary ‘Gold Rush Era’. These three elements formed the new collection.

LJ: How many pieces/styles contains the new collection?

AB: The new collection is composed of 35 styles, some of them are existing pieces from previous collections, but almost 25 are totally new developed ones. So it’s a big step for the brand.

LJ: Are the new styles only for men or did you also developed new women styles?

AdB: All the styles are just for man. In the past I made some items for women too, but I realized that the brand is too masculine so I quit making women styles.

LJ: This new drop is quite big. Have you planned to work more intense with your brand in the future?

AdB: Yes of course, this collection is the first of a new era of my brand. Everything started like a hobby, but now I decided to make things like a mature brand. Next year the brand will celebrates it’s 10 years anniversary so for me it was time to let it grow faster. This is the reason why I decided to expand the collection and make the next steps.

LJ: Which fabrics are used for the items? And do you have a favorite one?

AdB: As always I used a mix of different fabrics for the collection. It’s also the first time that I developed totally new fabrics which were made exclusively for me.

My favorite fabric in the collection is a 14oz selvedge fabric from the Japanese Kuroki mill. The fabric is dyed in 100% pure natural indigo. The colour of the fabric is the best I’ve ever seen and it fades very natural.

LJ: And where’re the fabrics coming from?

AdB: All the fabrics are coming from Japan and Italy.

LJ: Are the items all produced in Italy again?

AdB: Of course, this is a brand dna that I’ll never change…

LJ: There’s also a numbered bib-overall included with a Wabash fabric. The labels says ‘The Bandit Overalls for Miners’. Is it a collaboration with Cory Piehowicz?

AdB: Yes, this is a collaboration with Cory. We did a collab in the past which was very successful, so we decided to team-up again and created something special and unique.

LJ: When can we expect the new collection in stores?

AdB: The collection will be delivered to the shops in August 2019.

LJ: Are you planning to make more seasonal collections or are you dropping items when the time feels right?

AdB: I’ll make two collections each year. The Fall Winter collection is the main one with a lot of carry over products. This is because most of the fabrics are very heavy and for Spring Summer I’ll make a capsule collection with typical Summer products. This is still in progress at the moment.

LJ: Where can we see the items in real live?

AdB: I will exhibit with the new collection on the Clutch Collection Show in Yokohama, Japan this upcoming September. And next year in January I will join the Inspiration show by Rin Tanaka in L.A. too.
