The Collab Between Denham And Blackhorse Lane Ateliers
Denham joined forces together with London-based Blackhorse Lane Ateliers on an exciting collaboration. The collaboration is focused on telling the story of designing denim and setting a high standard in making the art of jeans production. The four-piece capsule collection brings Amsterdam and London together as a denim community collaboration.
The Blackhorse Lane Ateliers Company
Blackhorse Lane Ateliers is founded by Han Ates back in 2016 to create long-lasting premium jeans and denim styles. As a second generation, Londoner with Turkish Kurdish ancestry, Han and his family have a long history of manufacturing in the clothing and textile industry. With Han’s 25+ years of experience as a denim tailor and quality controller, it was a natural step to set up his own brand.
The brand steps far away from the fast fashion industry as each item is carefully made by hand with the highest-sourced denim fabrics in its impressive atelier in London. He and his skilled team offer multiple fits from modern slim to vintage straight, in all kinds of raw types of denim, always with a focus on eco-consciousness, community, and unmatched quality. Blackhorse Lane Ateliers is a heavy supporter of the buy less, buy local mentality.
Han’s favorite part of creating premium jeans is not designing a pattern or a certain detail. “Jeans have been around for over 150 years. So knowing that we know we are not reinventing the wheel by making them ourselves. I see us as ‘keepers’ of this amazing garment and I think jeans are going to be part of our world for another thousand years or so! Feeling part of that journey is the most fulfilling for me.”
The Collaboration Collection
The Denham x Blackhorse Lane Ateliers combines both the denim knowledge of Jason Denham (learn more about Jason here), founder of the Denham brand, and Han Ates (learn more about Han here), founder of Blackhorse Lane Ateliers. Another common denominator in this collab is London, as this was for years Jason’s hometown too.
The collaboration collection contains four unique created (denim) styles that are designed in Amsterdam but stitched carefully by hand in London. The collection features pieces such as an unwashed pair of five-pocket jeans, made of a 14oz deep indigo dye Japanese denim from Kaihara. And, there’s a workwear style denim jacket in the collection too, made with a 12 3/4oz organic cotton selvedge denim fabric from the Italian Candiani denim mill in Italy.
The jeans is constructed using a lifetime knowledge of tailoring innovation and heritage construction techniques, from one-piece fly construction, fully felled closed seams, and original 3/8” chain stitched hems to bespoke details such as blue line selvedge, heavy cotton drill pocket bags, and thick-cut vegetable dyed collaboration leather patches.
The collab jacket is made with a regular fit and is inspired by old English workers’ wear with a traditional five-button closure and tobacco stitching. The jacket is designed with a clean look, with on the front two huge slanted pockets.
Each of these denim garments are finished with collaborative stamped branding that tells a jean maker’s story of dedication to the craft of making long-lasting, authentic denim.
The Other Two Non-Denim Styles
Next to the two denim styles, Denham and Blackhorse Lane Ateliers developed also a classic t-shirt and sweater. So, in total there’s a special collaboration outfit, wearable for each day.
The white t-shirt is made with a boxy fit, while the grey sweater is slim-fitted. Both styles feature a small logo on the chest and the back has a larger one that celebrates both brands.
