The Selvedge Socks

With the Denim Days x Alfredo Gonzales selvedge socks you can show your real denim dedication as it honors the slow process and authentic craftsmanship of denim production. The design of the socks refers to the selvedge lines of authentically produced pairs of selvedge jeans. These jeans are made with selvedge fabrics which were the standard back in the days when all fabrics were produced on small shuttle looms. Shuttle looms are run by a wooden shuttle as the shuttle runs back and forth, so you will create a self-finished edge on both sides of the fabric, which means they don’t fray. The most common selvedge fabrics are usually white with red-colored yarn in the middle. Due to this red yarn, this type of selvedge is called redline selvedge.

Due to the high demand of jeans in the 1950’s, projectile looms were used more and more as they’re around ten times faster. But, luckily shuttle looms were are still used as well, and especially since the mid-1990’s more brand were using them again as they want to stay close as possible to the originals. The beauty of selvedge fabrics is that the slower pace of shuttle looms puts less tension on the yarn, which results in more slubs than character to the denim fabric.
