A Limited-Edition Authentic Checkers Game
Together with Pakistani denim mill Soorty, I worked on a special seeding product to send out to their partners. The idea was to highlight them one of the latest denim fabric developments in a playful and creative way. The outcome is an authentic Soorty x Long John collaboration checkers game, but this time in denim. It’s made as a limited-edition and it has been flying out all over the world.
How The Collaboration Started
The checkers game has a long history as historians believe that the oldest form of this game was already played around 3,000 B.C.E. Our idea of developing a unique Soorty x Long John denim checkers game started during the first lockdown. Everyone was forced to stay at home and challenged to make it comfortable at home but also make fun in-house.
So, old game boards were dusted off and played with the whole family. Being easy and fun to play, checkers is one of the most beloved games, played by many generations. Being both rooted in denim, we came up with the idea to create a denim version to bring some joy at home in these still challenging times. Playing a game brings people together, a strong connection with denim itself.
The Denim Fabric Of The Game
For this limited-edition Soorty x Long John checkers game we used Soorty’s fabric Staying In Pulse Blue from their second Seasonless collection. It is a rigid cotton free article with TENCEL™ Lyocell and LENZING™ ECOVERO™ viscose in its composition that not only has an amazing soft touch and an authentic look but also washes down in bright shades, reacting very well to laser as well as other conscious laundry techniques. Using fibers derived from wood pulp of sustainabily managed forests, brings a connection to nature with an appreciation for our planet.
Hand-Dyed Natural Indigo Checkers
For the checkers, we’ve lasered the fabric in Soorty’s NASDA Innovation Lab in Çorlu, Turkey. The blue checkers were also hand-dyed in natural indigo there.
