Can you introduce yourself (who are you and what are you doing):

I am Mitch de Vries, 27 years old living in Amsterdam and running the Red Wing Shoes store Amsterdam. I run the actual store, the buying process, online store, social media, etc.

Can you tell a little bit about the history of the Red Wing Amsterdam store:

The Red Wing Shoes store Amsterdam opened in 2010. Menno van Meurs of Tenue de Nîmes was selling Red Wing Shoes in his store and loved the product so much he thought it would be amazing to have a Red Wing Store in Amsterdam. We are actually open for 7 years now!

What are the most popular Red Wing styles at the moment:

During this period of the year the Weekender collection is pretty popular because of the warmer weather. Besides this the Iron Ranger, Moc Toe and Blacksmith might be the most popular styles.

What’s the most popular leather colour in the Red Wing collection:

The Copper Rough & Tough. Every style in Copper Rough & Tough is one of the most beloved shoes within that family.

Are there new styles added for upcoming season and which one:

For this summer season we have new color updates on the Weekender Collection and we have the brand new Merchant Oxford, this is a real proper Oxford shoe! Upcoming winter we will have a lot of exclusive styles coming up which I am excited about. This winter we are going to put a lot of focus on the Pecos style, the western pull-on boot, it will arrive in black suede, killer shoe! And also a lot of new Womens collection coming up!

How’s the new women collection going? And what’s the fast runner?

We are really suprised and therefore also satisfied with the Womens collection. It is a bit of a switch to sell boots speficically to women because they are a lot different than men, but its a positive change! A touch of femine is never wrong! The Iron Ranger, Harriet, Clara and Moc Toe are the most popular amongst women.

What’s the most iconic Red Wing style in your opinion and why:

To me this is the 6’’ Classic Moc Toe because it doesn’t matter where and on who you see them, you will always recognize this as a Red Wing Shoe. Besides this, it’s the Red Wing Shoe which did put the brand Red Wing Shoes on the worldwide market in the early 50’s, so yes the most iconic.

Why is Red Wing so strong connected to the denim industry in your opinion?

Because denim and Red Wing Shoes are both a quality product. They get better with age, last a long time and can both be repaired. Last but not least, they just look perfect together.

Where is your inspiration coming from as manager of the Red Wing store:

Lots of different influences; music, art, love, photography, fashion, retail, traveling etc.

What’s your personal favorite denim brand and fit:

There are a lot of high quality denim brands on the market right now so it is hard to choose one, but my personal favorite will be the Pablo fit of the Tenue de Nîmes brand. I have quiet some legs and this one fits me perfect on the upper leg and is slim/straight on the ankles. Perfect to wear with my Pecos boots!

What’s your favorite (denim) city:

Amsterdam, but mostly because of the amount of people on the streets wearing denim. I guess we can easily say 80% of the people walking the streets of Amsterdam are wearing a pair of jeans. Women, men, kids, cheap or high quality does not really matter, the Dutch simply like denim.

Can you show the most crazy worn pair(s) of Red Wing from the store collection:

We have one pair of Engineer #2268’s dating from 1991 which is so beautifully worn. Back in the days black was not completly dyed through so if you started wearing them the brown leather would show itself through the black which would create a green/greyish color. Just amazing! We bought them in Japan in the Hopes More Boot store.

What can we expect in the future of Red Wing:

What I like about Red Wing Shoes is that they do not make compromises within quality and customer service. So what you can expect from Red Wing in the future is that they will definitely will continue making a product which will last you a very long time and make you really happy!
