The Diesel x Diesel Collection
The new Diesel x Diesel collection was born out of Renzo Rosso’s, the founder of Diesel, desire to reintroduce their timeless icons in the modern-day. It all started when Renzo was studying how to fuse the label’s heritage within the context, and outlook, of the year 2021. Together with Diesel’s creative director, Glenn Martens, they fused the brand’s history with the present. A celebration of Diesel’s background, but ready for today.
This special collection is called Diesel x Diesel as it is a collection of revamped classics that are selected from their archive which contains many thousands of garments. All the items are inspired by the American Route 66, college apparel, and workwear. It takes on a distinctly North American aesthetic, with a deep look back at all the memorable research trips that Renzo and his multicultural design team did back in the late ‘80s. The outcome is a 24-piece collection.
Items From The Collection
Within the Diesel x Diesel collection, there’s a varsity jacket that has been reimagined in extra-distressed leather, with a new Diesel typeface in patches across the shoulder blades. Also, a mixed-material coat of shearling, cotton, leather, and jacquard wool has been recreated. It was originally inspired by a late 1980’s research trip to the South of America. For each piece, the underlying idea is the bridging of entities that are separated, whether governmentally (land borders) or temporally (the then-and-now).
Fake Smiles Campaign
For the launch of the Diesel x Diesel collection, they created a new campaign called Fake Smiles. It’s about our constant pursuit of happiness. The campaign’s images feature subjects in daily mundane scenarios, all masked with extra-joyful expressions, creating surreal imagery that evokes a sense of nostalgia and captures the spirit of the decades that inspired this collection.
