Worn As First Watch To The Moon
Omega teamed up with watch brand Swatch to give their iconic Speedmaster Moonwatch an innovative take. The original Speedmaster Moonwatch can be seen on many wrists of denim heads as the design goes perfectly hand in hand with jeans (its also included in previous article: Top 5 Denim Watches by Amsterdam Vintage Watches). Also, this watch was the first watch ever that was worn to the moon, so an authentic and unique story.
The Speedmaster Moonwatch has been a part of all six moon landings. It was chosen by NASA in 1965 for all manned space missions. Since its earliest years, it has been a part of the greatest explorations of space, and most notably, became the first watch worn on the moon during the Apollo 11 lunar landing in 1969. The legendary chronograph is an impressive representation of the brand’s adventurous pioneering spirit.
The Unique Features Of The Watches
The Omega x Swatch collaboration contains a new collection of eleven Bioceramic watches named after planetary bodies that will have you reaching for the stars. The watches are made with an asymmetrical case, the iconic ‘dot over ninety’ detail on the tachymetric scaled bezel, and the distinctive Speedmaster subdials.
Furthermore, all the dials feature the Omega x Swatch branding, the iconic Speedmaster logo, and the new MoonSwatch logo. A closer look at the glass construction reveals the ‘hidden’ ‘S’ integrated into the center of the crystal. The circular pattern on the dial’s outer ring and subdials bring a refined touch to the design, complementing the sharp and smooth lugs construction. The hours, minutes, chronograph seconds hands, and hour markers sport Super-LumiNova for a perfect glow in the dark.
These playful tributes to the planets celebrate the collaboration between the plucky company that saved the Swiss watchmaking industry and the iconic maker of the Speedmaster Moonwatch.
The Printed Casebacks Of The Watches
The case back on each Omega x Swatch Moonwatch is printed with the mission text and features integrated wording sure to inspire. “Dream Big – Fly High – Explore the Universe – Reach for the Planets”. Every battery cover on the back has an image of the planetary body that inspires the design.
