How Ian Berry Started
Ian Berry is a British artist who finds old pairs of denim, cuts them into pieces, and collages the sections of fabric back together in one of a kind art. He started with the idea when he found an old pile of jeans, almost 15 years ago, after cleaning his house. He came up with the idea to give these old washed out pairs a second life and started to make portraits of icons like Marlon Brando, James Dean, and Marilyn Monroe. All of them are strongly linked to the history of denim.
Nowadays he takes his inspiration from places from all over the world, but also his hometown, London. While walking the streets he got inspired by laundries, pubs, and the underground. These places are used in his previous work too, check it out here, and here.

Denim Atelier With More Than 2.000 Pairs Of Jeans
First, he makes a photo of the space or object, that’s the starting point of his new work. Then he searches for hours in his huge denim stock, which contains more than 2.000 pairs of jeans, for the right blue shades. He cuts them and started to clue. It can take weeks, months to get the final result he was aiming for.
Unique Denim Art Pieces
The outcome are unique denim art pieces. Some people think his art is painted, but in fact, it’s made of denim fabrics. All his work contains many different layers of denim fabrics, which makes it almost three dimensional. Sometimes he’s also using the hems of the jeans, as these give his work a special look.
