Using The Japanese Kintsugi Technique
In 2021, Sanny Bijvoet started the Kintsugi Bag brand which is based on the Japanese Kintsugi technique. This authentic repair technique is known to repair ceramic with gold. It’s similar to the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi. So, it’s also embraced by imperfectness. Each item of Kintsugi Bag is made by hand in The Netherlands.
Upcycling Old Dutch Army Styles
With Kintsugi Bag, Sanny started to realize a long-awaited dream. For her Kintsugi Bags, she’s using old Dutch army clothing from the 1980s and 1990s. She’s reusing them in an upcycle way, so therefore she’s using the slogan of the brand: ‘The sustainable green bag with a golden touch‘. Each damaged part of the original army item is decorated with gold paste to refer to the Kintsugi technique. This golden repair is a unique branding element of each bag and makes it also very recognizable.
The Kintsugi Bag Collection
Within the Kintsugi Bag collection are several different models. The collection goes from tote bag styles to big shoppers and even small pouches. Some of the styles are made with sturdy handles that are made of vintage leather straps and antique brass rivets. The leather straps were collected from vintage markets and thrift shops. There are also some styles made with classic YKK zippers, to be sure the bag can be closed safely.
Water Repellent Fabrics That Will Age With Usage
Over time the Kintsugi Bags, made with sturdy and water-repellent fabrics, will age further and will give each bag more character. Each bag is branded with an out- or inside-brand label, and ready for everyday usage.
