Superstitch By Arthur Leclerq

Superstitch is founded by Arthur Leclerq from France. He released his first pair of blue jeans in 2020. Now, just four years later, he achieved an impressive denim atelier from where he’s running his denim brand. Over the years, the Superstitch collection has grown into several pairs of jeans, shirts, and jackets. The core of the collection is made in Japan, but special batches are made in France by Arthur himself behind the sewing machine.

The Kick-Off Of Superstitch

The kick-off of Superstitch began when Arthur Leclerq started a huge fascination for denim and workwear. This made him decide to start his own brand. His first ever produced pair of jeans was the LR-01 style. This pair is dedicated to his grandparents, Lydie and Réne, hence the first letters L and R. The cut is inspired by Arthur’s favorite era in denim, between 1972 and 1974. Therefore, the LR-01 features design elements that can be tracked down to this period. This is to respect the heritage of denim.

The Styles And The Fabrics

All parts of the fabrics that compose a pair of Superstitch jeans are cut specially and intentionally. And the type of fabric is key at Superstitch. That’s why Arthur chose a ‘Shrink-to-fit’ selvedge fabric that is woven in Japan. The fabric is exclusively woven for Superstitch. The goal was to recapture the exact fadings and aging of the original 501’s – type 66 – from 1972 to 1974.

The collection of Superstitch features several classic five-pocket blue jeans styles. There’s also a jeans and a Type 2 denim jacket style available in ecru. This specific 14oz unsanforized ecru selvedge denim fabric is woven on a rare electric shuttle loom in Japan. This loom weaves at a specific loosened tension that gives a sort of ‘peppered look’ to the top side of the denim.

The same goes for the blue selvedge fabrics within the collection. They’re 14oz, unsanforized, and feature a long fiber. Next to these, there’s also a black fabric available for a five-pocket pant. Made with a 100% cotton large cord bedford fabric.

All the designs within the Superstitch collection are true must-haves. Based on classics that stand the test of time. Whether you pick the five-pocket jeans, Type 2 jackets, or the 1950s-inspired Western ‘Sawtooth’ denim shirt. You simply can’t go wrong! Produced with an eye for detail as the same SPI (Stitch Per Inches), thread color, and buttons and rivets.

The Fitting Process

As all the Superstitch fabrics are unsanforized, they will shrink between 12% to 15% when washed for the first time. Therefore it’s needed to take a look carefully at the sizing chart for picking the right size. Superstitch will guide you of course to make the right choice.

After picking the right size, each hem of each jeans will be finished on an original Union Special 43200g sewing machine. This is to achieve the authentic chain stitch hemming look. In the end, when wearing and washing, it will give your jeans the beloved ‘roping effect’. Something you can see on vintage jeans from mainly the 1940s to 1970s.

Superstitch Washing Guide

Superstitch believes that a pair of jeans should be washed on a regular base. This is to strengthen the fibers of the fabric and to soften it too. Next to that, washing is needed to achieve the desired vintage look on your pair. Arthur’s advice is to wait the first 3 to 4 months before the first wash. When your jeans is ready for a refreshment, flip it inside out, and pick a low spin cycle program on your washing machine at 30 degrees. He also recommends washing your jeans with other pairs.

Superstitch shares 3 different ways of achieving different fades;

  • For contrasted fades: wait 6 months before the first wash.
  • For natural fades: wait 3 months before the first wash.
  • And if you don’t have a mission: wash it when you think your jeans are thirsty.

The Location Of Superstitch In Paris

Superstitch is located in Paris at Rue Racine. When entering the denim atelier you will see Arthur live at work, together with his colleague. You will notice immediately the craftsmanship and the passion for denim. There are many machines, and worn-in examples of Superstitch to see in the work space annex denim store. On the walls, many original vintage Levi’s styles are framed as inspiration. Same as the original Singer’s and Union Special machines, some of them are waiting to be restored by Arthur to produce jeans and jackets again for the made-in-France line of the brand.

Superstitch is a must-visit when in Paris for everyone who is in search of a pair of jeans or jacket that will serve many years to come!
