Vault by Vans Meets Nigel Cabourn
Today one of the most exciting collaborations of the year has launched, Vault by Vans x Nigel Cabourn. They’re coming together to introduce a collection inspired by vintage military materials, colors and aesthetics, and the surf and beach culture. The sunny California vibes are mixed with the outspoken style of the British fashion designer.
The Vault By Vans Collection
The Vault by Vans collection offers a diverse line-up of elevated and premium collections representing the intersection of fashion, art, and music, featuring the brand’s most iconic silhouettes. Each season, the category presents designs and collaborations with partners who represent pinnacle creative culture, offered in select retailers only. This time they teamed up with Nigel Cabourn for a special collection.
The British Designer Nigel Cabourn
Nigel Cabourn, a British fashion designer is known for his unisex outerwear and vintage-inspired clothing. He launched his brand already in 1970, and since then took his influence from military and utilitarian clothing, sourcing the highest quality materials and constructing timeless pieces with his personalized touch.
Nigel launched his menswear brand in the North East of England, where he had previously studied fashion design. It wasn’t until 2013 that he finally launched his first womenswear collection and opened his UK flagship store at Covent Gardens in London.
The Inspiration Of The Collection
For the Vault by Vans collection, Nigel and his collaborator Emilie Casiez, who heads his women’s line, took inspiration from military bags and clothing from the 1940s through the 1970s, tapping into vintage military materials, colors, and aesthetics from his impressive archive.
They mixed rugged thick textiles, custom jacquards, brushed and chipped metal vent holes, camouflage prints, graphic designs as well as custom camp linings and footbeds in the collection. The color orange is dominating the collection together with custom hand-drawn details and deco stitching.
Nigel Cabourn About The Collaboration
“I am very pleased to introduce my first collaboration with Vault by Vans,” Nigel Cabourn shared. “This exciting unisex collection is filled with fun designs inspired by my recent trips to California and Japan. Combining surf style with classic Cabourn military, a strong color story, and graphical influences, I really think we have come together to achieve a great, relaxed, après surf-inspired collection.”
The Collab Collection
The Vault by Vans x Nigel Cabourn collaboration is a complete collection, it ranges from caps, shirts, sweats, fleece pullover, to several must-have footwear styles.
One of the footwear styles is the Vault by Vans OG Authentic’s, made in a crazy navy mix of different colored fabrics. They’re inspired by characteristics of US Naval workwear, and use a mixture of the color-blocked aged canvas. It replicates the shortage of fabrics that occurred during WW2.
Another Authentic style is used with a camouflage design with splashes of orange amid the usual olive, khaki, and army green. A painterly quality to the print, deco stitching on the vamp, and fraying at the tongue bring a unique DIY vibe to the shoe.
A third version of the Authentic’s is inspired by the US Naval deck plimsolls of WW2, and features aged cotton canvas uppers with contrasting navy outsole. They also feature details including rip and repair stitching, like the other Authentic’s, camouflage interior, branded eyelets, and USN toe stencil, which is a nod to the naval kit bags from WW2.
Within the collection they also created versions of four other Vans’ silhouettes, the OG Classic Slip-On LX, in custom jacquard, the OG Style 23 LX with its striking navy and red-striped sole, the OG Style 24 in luxe herringbone tweed, and a top-to-bottom army green take on the OG Slip-On LX.
Next to the footwear collection, Vault by Vans and Nigel Cabourn developed an apparel line too, with highlights as the Chore Coat. This jacket features a kaleidoscopic print, inspired by artisanal carpets, tapestries, and rugs. A graphic crew neck, fleece pullover features elevated construction, and Nigel’s artwork screen-printed on the front. A Loden Green cap, with crème deco stitching and doodles by Nigel, and many more outstanding styles are included. To top it off, there’re also socks in this special collaboration package.
